Dear Parents,

Yesterday, we were greeted by a perfect morning to celebrate the May Crowning, a celebration which gives praise to Mary as our Queen of Heaven and Earth.  The morning’s pleasant sunshine was welcomed by everyone, but the peacefulness and tranquility I experienced was inspired by the students’ recitation of the Holy Rosary.  This special event will be one of the earliest school memories for many JSS students, especially for our second grade students whose solemn participation in the May Crowning is a beautiful affirmation of their faith formation.   Many years ago, I learned that “the gentle repetition of the words of the rosary helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells.”   Thanks to all the parents who donated flowers and whose busy schedules allowed them the time to join their children in prayer.

Safety Barrier along Rio Road
Those of you who walk along Rio Road to or from the lower parking lot have noticed that the orange safety delineators have been removed by the City of Carmel.  Please use caution as you walk along Rio Road.

Scholastic Book Fair News
The Buy One Get One Free Scholastic Book Fair will be coming back to JSS on May 30 and sales will go through June 5.  This is a great opportunity to purchase summer reading material for your children, while supporting the JSS library.

AT&T Babysitting Update
A special thanks to all parents for making the AT&T babysitting fund raiser a great success.  This year’s net proceeds to the school are approximately $24,000. Great work.  Nellie Cardinalli, chairperson for this project, is seeking two co-chairs to work with her to coordinate and host next year’s event.  If you are interested, please stop by the school office for more information.

 50/50 Drawing Ticket Sales
The 8th Annual JSS 50/50 Drawing, the third and final event of our main fundraisers requiring your participation, has begun!  For those of you who are unfamiliar, a 50/50 drawing is one in which the proceeds are split in half and, in our case, 50% goes to the school, and the other 50% is divided equally among the holders of three winning tickets.  The winning tickets will be drawn on Friday, June 9, at the JSS Mini Olympics.

Help Wanted
If you, along with your children, are interested in joining me after the Masses this Sunday (May 21) to sell 50/50 tickets, please respond via email.

Hot Lunch News
Aqua Terra will announce an important option for parents to consider regarding hot lunch for next year.  Aqua Terra proposed the option of a plan for parents to pay $100 per month (per child) for a child’s lunch for the entire school year.  This equates to about $5.88 per lunch.  This plan will ensure that your child has a nutritious lunch every school day.  We are working with TMS to enable automatic deductions each month for your hot lunch payments.    More details on this to follow.

JSS Music News
For the 2017-18 school year, Mr. Michael Blackburn, JSS music teacher, will initiate the following programs:

1st and 2nd grade students will learn to play the pentatonic flute.

3rd grade students will learn to play the recorder.

4th grade students will learn to play the violin.

5th and 6th grade students will form a
strings orchestra.

7th and 8th grade students will form a choir.

Mr. Blackburn envisions a band program for 7th and 8th grade students forming for the 2017-18 school year, but a start date has yet to be determined.

12:10pm Dismissal on Friday, May 26.
This early release date has just been added to the calendar.  Friday, May 26 will be an early dismissal (12:10pm) to create time for JSS teacher professional development.  Extended care will be open.  Memorial Day is Monday, May 29, so this may be a good opportunity for those families who are making travel plans.

53rd Annual Carmel Mission Fiesta
Remember to mark your calendar for Sunday, September 24, 2017 -- the date of the 53rd Annual Carmel Mission Fiesta.
