It is with joyful enthusiasm that I greet you following our first week of school and share some news and observations of your children, their love of learning, and some of the highlights of the first week at JSS. Truly, it is a privilege for me to serve you in this ministry of the Carmel Mission Basilica Parish; and I am honored by your decision to select Junipero Serra School for your children.
As Catholic educators, we believe in the words as expressed in Proverbs, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Remember the Lord in everything you do.” This philosophy inspires gratitude and an understanding of serving each other with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. It is in this spirit that we begin the new school year and give thanks for our abundant blessings of friendship, family, and faith.
It is with tremendous gratitude and appreciation that I, along my colleagues, give thanks to Fr. Paul and the Carmel Mission Basilica Parish leadership and staff for their tireless efforts to prepare the school facility for this school year. Their efforts included painting, deep cleaning, plaster repairs, pavement repairs, landscaping, computer maintenance, and many other projects to ensure a clean, safe, healthy, and welcoming environment.
I had the opportunity to observe the students in all
I invite everyone to read the attached Welcome Letter from Mrs. Kimberly Cheng, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Monterey. Her tremendous support of Junipero Serra School during the past year has been a testament to her love of Catholic Education, especially our students at JSS.
Here are a few reminders:
The Welcome Spaghetti Dinner, Wednesday, Sept. 6.
This is the first event hosted by the JSS Parents Association (JSSPA). Please join us on September 6th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm in Murphy Gym. This is a fun, no-cost evening for all our JSS families, staff, and parish office. Please respond to the
Both After School Study Clubs Begin Next Tuesday, Sept. 5
Mrs. Rowe will be hosting a twice weekly study club for students in grades 6, 7, and 8. This is a perfect opportunity for junior high students to complete their homework after school (two times per week) with the option of receiving guided practice and consultation from an outstanding teacher. (Extended Care fees will apply to all students during their study time period.) Students may “drop in” to study with Mrs. Rowe on the days of their choosing (Tuesday and/or Thursday), meaning that regular attendance is not mandatory.
Mrs. Magee will be hosting a study club in her classroom, Room 3, after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is a great opportunity for students in Grades 1 through 5 to get their homework done under the guidance and supervision of Mrs. Magee. Her energetic spirit is sure to encourage and motivate all students. The Study Club will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00pm to 4:00pm, and will be sponsored by the JSS Extended Care Program. (Extended Care fees will apply to all students in the Study Club.) Students may “drop in” to study with Mrs. Magee on the days of their choosing (Tuesday and/or Thursday), meaning that regular attendance is not mandatory.
The JSS Parking Policy is designed to maintain a safe environment, and therefore, a strong expectation of adherence to this policy is expected. During regular school hours (7:45am to 3:15pm), parking is prohibited in the JSS staff parking lot adjacent to the main gate close to the front office. (The only exception to this policy is for the single space that will be reserved for a member of the JSS parent community.) When parents are visiting the school between 7:45am and 3:15pm, they must park in the Carmel Mission Parish lot which is the lot between the parish offices and Rio Road. Additionally, parents may park in the lower lot adjacent to the Murphy Center. Parking is not permitted in the teacher’s parking area off Lasuen Drive. Please, when driving up the hill to the lot by the school’s main office, (during non-school
For those of you who are new to JSS, our hot lunch vendor, AquaTerra, (known for their nutritious meals), has arranged a special rate of $100 per month, per child. This is a practical and efficient way to provide a nutritious hot meal every day of the school year for your child. Imagine, not having to worry about your child’s lunch for the entire school year, and knowing that the nutritional content of their lunch meets the highest standards. And, at this rate, each meal is very reasonably priced at approximately a little over $5.00 per day. Also, JSS can provide automatic billing so that you will never worry about sending your child to school with lunch money. For those families who would prefer to select lunches on a daily basis, the price of each lunch will be $7.00 each and parents must order two weeks in advance and include payment. A sign-up sheet for AquaTerra lunch is available in the school office.
Scholastic Book Fair News

Altar Server Invitation
Would you like to learn how your child can participate in the Mass as an altar server? Please read the attachment to find out more information about being an altar server. Or, you may contact Christian Cahill, at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
Early Release at 2:00pm next Wednesday, September 6. Extended care begins immediately after school.
Each school year, JSS requires a $50 field trip transportation fee for each student. This fee enables JSS to utilize the Carmel School District transportation system (school busses) for almost all of its field trips.
This school year, I have implemented a $10 JSSPA fee. This fee provides supplemental financial support for the JSSPA and assists them in all their efforts to reach out to the school community through all of their hosted activities and “behind-the-scenes” work for the school.
These fees may be paid by check, cash, or credit card at the front office.
