Training takes place in September
WHY ART? The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said. When children are invited to disclose what a work of art helps them FEEL, they must reach into their POETIC CAPACITIES to find the words that will do the job. In the art studio, the student’s “voice” is not limited to what she has language to describe. Problems have more than one solution, judgment prevails over rules, and one learns that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.*
ART IN ACTION Junipero Serra School has a long history of offering art education within its core curriculum. Beginning this 2016-2017 school year, we are excited to introduce a fresh and innovative new art curriculum to our school. ART IN ACTION is a nonprofit organization dedicated since 1982 to fostering the educational development and creativity of children through innovative visual arts programs and communities. The Art in Action Program provides an engaging, hands-on curriculum that teaches art history, art appreciation, and art techniques. The program also integrates visual art with standards-based language arts, math, science, and social studies. The curriculum meets National and California academic standards and uses online multimedia technology to take visual art education to entirely new levels.

WE NEED YOU! The JSS ART IN ACTION program is volunteer-run, with classes taught by volunteer parent docents. Art in Action makes teaching art fun and easy with recipe-style curriculum online, training workshops, lesson-specific art materials and year-round support. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN ARTIST TO DO THIS! You will be amazed at the incredible resources that have been developed to make this a fun and easy process for the volunteers. Your life will be changed by this experience…guaranteed!
OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED
Classroom Docents: Volunteer to guide the students through the Art in Action lessons. No prior art knowledge or artistic ability is necessary. Free training is provided at the Art in Action main campus in Menlo Park, and right here at JSS in the last week of September!
Classroom Helpers (Assistant Docent): Volunteer to provide assistance in the classroom during Art in Action lesson. This involves minor prep work, passing out materials, supporting the students through their project, and collecting materials.
Ceramics Coordinator: Helps docents teaching clay lessons.
Mounting/Labeling: Most artwork is mounted on paperwork and all artwork needs to be labeled with the student’s name. Labels for each project/class will be provided. This is a great take home project.
